Krishna's Lesson on No Expectations

Divine Guidance: Embracing Krishna's Wisdom in Modern Life

"Apeksha" meaning Expectation is always tied to every Human Being’s Relations with Nature. We all think and believe that our Expectations need to be fulfilled by everyone all the time

”But Remember this world was not created only to fulfill one’s expectations all the time”

A Human only loves someone who satisfies their expectations. But Expectations (Apekshain) in nature by default are not getting fulfilled. Because Expectations are born in One’s Mind and they are not known to anyone. So other people are Blind or are Unaware of what one’s expectations are.

No matter how much one tries to fulfill the expectations of others, In reality, one will never be able to fulfill that expectation completely. This is the point where it leads to something called Sangarsh meaning Struggle or Conflict. Every Relation then becomes an Expectation.

But as a Human, one should not make this Expectation the Basis or Center Foundation for Relations Instead accept the reality of every Relationship on their Basis which defines them. Then only one’s life will be truly filled with pure Joy and Peace.

Why did I mention the word Joy and not the word Happiness?

Joy is an inner feeling. Happiness is an Outward expression.

Happiness tends to be achieved externally, while joy is something achieved internally. For example, we can feel happy when we receive something like a gift or achieve something like awards or honors. These things are external or belong to the surface of our lives. It is not something deeper but, rather, superficial.

Joy, on the other hand, is something deeper. It is something we feel internally in our lives as human beings. For example, Joy can be felt when we pray and worship our Gods.

The one scene among many that I love from the Mahabharat Series where Krishna explains Arjuna on the battlefield.

The Conversation Goes like this:

  1. Krishna says "In Actuality, no Karma enslaves a human. The Expectations associated with it enslave human".

  2. Arjuna asks Krishna - “How is this possible, Madhav(Lord)”?

  3. Krishna then says - “If you don’t have the hope of winning this war or the fear of losing it, then at the end of this war will you attain pleasure or pain?

  4. Arjuna answers - “Neither Pleasure, Madhav(Lord), nor Pain”

  5. Krishna - “It means your pleasure, pain, disappointment, sorrows and arrogance are not an outcome of this war?”

The expectations that you have associated with this war are because of that. This is what Karma Yoga is all about. From Karma Yoga to Bhakti Yoga and from Bhakti Yoga we attain “Jnana Yoga”.

To witness my universal embodiment is the real Knowledge, Arjun. Do what you have to do, Your Karma and rest will follow. Later Arjun is asked to Fight for the Greater Good without any Expectations attached to it.

My Personal Experience

During Childhood like any other child, I used to watch Serials along with my Parents. Rani Lakshmi Bai, Jodha Akbar and of course Gopi Bahu, Oh wait, I mean Saath Nibhana Satiya, to mention a few. During this time I was fortunate enough that I was introduced to this Serial called Mahabharat which came in 2013-14 on Starplus back then which is now on Hotstar. I have Binge-watched this Series during the Covid lockdown and many other times until now. Every time I start watching it again I have the mindset that I might have missed something last time when I watched but this time I will learn something new again.

  • I used to have a lot of expectations from the people around me from the Beginning but this kind of thinking and mindset always used to have a negative impact on my mental peace.

  • In the past 3-4 years few incidents happened with me to come to the realization that Expectations will only hurt you when you have them. During this time I started to look inward into myself and evaluate every single minute particle of my thoughts of why and how things are happening with and within me.

  • I started this habit of Writing down my Thoughts on plain paper until the solution was found which looked Believable and actionable, And then threw that paper away. I Cultivated and took this habit from the First book I read which was “Think Like a Monk” by Jay Shetty. Someday will have a deeper look into this concept in further Blogs.

  • As Human nature, I think Having few expectations from the right people is sometimes Good, to be honest.

  • But always try to have belief rather than expectations because the people around you whom you feel are great and will always be on your side no matter what, Will one day in an unexpected situation or moment leave your side without any genuine reasoning. Then you have to carry that Guilt of why such a thing happened.

The Lesson Learnt: Never give control of your powerful thoughts of your mind to anyone else because, in the end, it will only result in having a negative impact on your Mental Peace. Take control of your thoughts, Analyze them and direct that energy towards something which will lead to a Greater good.
